Big changes start with small steps

At TREDS, we believe that waste should be a resource, not a liability. Our mission is to lead the way in repurposing waste materials, starting with tyres, into high-quality products that supports a circular economy

Our story.

TREDS was founded by two friends from University, Fraser and Christian.

Both were working in Kenya for a period of time when they came across a remarkable invention. While trekking through the bush, their guides Joseph, Adan and James, wore sandals made from recycled tyres. Both were amazed by their unique design, durability, and their ability to extend the life of disused tyres that would otherwise of been burnt or discarded.

Fraser purchased his own pair in the nearest market and these sandals were not only comfortable and sturdy, but they also looked good. From that moment, In partnership with a local workshop, TREDS was born - a company founded on the principle of repurposing tyres into sandals for all.

The Sandal.

The sandal has come a long way from the first pair bought. There are now two variations - the Slaidi (Slider), and Mbili (two strap).

All TREDS are made in a small workshop in Nairobi.

The process starts with the tyre being cut down to its necessary parts, the tyre for the sole and the inner tubes for the straps. The tyres are obtained from a local garage that would have otherwise been disposed of.

For extra comfort, EVA is used in the mid-sole, with leather stitched onto the top and a suede leather is put onto the inside of the straps for further comfort. All leather is sourced from a local supplier to benefit the local economy.

Every pair of TREDS is made by hand with little to no machinery used in their production.

At TREDS we have two fundamental goals

‘Reimagining waste’

In a world of mass consumerism and disposable trends, TREDS strives to make a genuine change.

By choosing TREDS, you're not only investing in a durable product but also in the fight against pollutant tyre waste. With an estimated 1 billion units of tyre waste produced annually, accounting for 2% of total global waste output, it's time to make a change. In Kenya alone, an estimated 2 million waste tyres are either burnt or dumped each year, contributing to respiratory and cancerous health risks for the population.

By choosing TREDS, you're helping to limit harmful toxins and pollutants entering our fragile planet. By ‘reimagining waste’, we can help to get further value out of discarded products.

Each pair of TREDS bought therefore plays a small but vital role in reducing tyre waste.

‘Ethical working’

At TREDS, we're committed to creating an enduring product that embraces uniqueness and ethical working practices. Every pair of TREDS is handmade and it is our firm commitment that we will keep it that way. We support the local economy by employing artisans and making sure relevant health and safety requirements are in place. for the artisans whom we work with.
